Introduction - Who are Martyrium?

Martyrium got together in October 1999 by five members with a common desire to play black metal. Rehearsals began at once and the band rapidly began writing material, in which various influences which the band hadn't counted on before began seeping in, rapidly
transforming their material into highly intelligent and creative music.

The first live show was thereby played a year after the band's inception,
exposing them to a considerable audience who immediately realized and reacted to MARTYRIUM's highly original form of crafting extreme metal.

Recording for the first album soon started, and in November 2001 the debut CD Withering In Voluptuous Embrace was unleashed. The release consisted of highly dense and multilayered symphonic black metal, moving from delicate, morbid ambiences to vitriolic, violent
atmospheres.

This CD was overwhelmingly received outside Maltese shores, and the band soon inked a recording deal with American Line Productions, followed by a mini-tour in November 2004 thorughout France & Belgium).

Spring 2005 awaited a very important event for Martyrium when they supported ROTTING CHRIST on the 19th March, while on 16 th April they shall be featured as the guests-of-honour for GILDA, Bisoul Promotions' latest event.

Following that, the band shall be preparing themselves for their second opus later in 2005 entitled, "The Carnage Lit By Darkness."

Martyrium, the Reviews

Martyrium is the leading black metal band from Malta. Working on new material, this album is from 2002 but still actual. Their style of black metal is enriched by symphonic, enchanting and atmospheric elements. Raw male vocals with a backup of clean female voices. Keyboard spheres and compelling guitars. Tempo in the long songs are mainly in the uptempo section but with lots of breaks and changes. The missing element on this album the pauses between the intro and the first song and the other pauses between the songs. Most of them are beginning with a short intro and it would be nice to had them right after the end of the previous song. Like you listening to one song, but that is my opinion. But it is a nice album and that counts! - www.brutalism.com

Hailing from Malta and clearly graduating from the Cradle of Filth school of dramatic, gothic black metal, you could be forgiven for writing these guys off, but do so at your own peril. Malta has in fact a number of top quality bands, including our very own Forsaken (wink), and these guys are every bit as professional as COF and in my opinion have more talent and a better understanding of musical arrangements. As you would expect, keyboards are used extensively and in a complex way and the songs have hooks and twists throughout as well as great interplay between male and female vocals. The band shouldn't be described as COF clones though as they have so much ability of their own and although they follow the same formula, they create some devastating black metal that must be heard - Golden Lake Prod

Symphonic Black Metal from Malta. - What to say...brilliant! This is one of those albums which should be enjoyed to the least significant note. Not an album that will be enjoyed on the first hearing... Don`t get me wrong, this is because it is so complex ( especially the work on the synth... orgasmatic) that one should hear it several times to get the utmost out of it. This work of art is one that can be enjoyed by all lovers of the genere... this is because it contains brutal highly technical tracks like "The Ebon River Princess" and highly melodic tracks such as the outstanding "promises". Again, brilliant... nice work from MARTYRIUM... in my opinion, this band will go far!!! - Redstream Inc.
