Canniria

Biography

It all began in September 1999 when Malcolm Meilaq (guitars) and Matthew "Geddim" Sammut (bass) met to form a band. In this embryonic and experimental stage the band played around with both influences and lineup in order to perfect their style.

In September 2000 Steve "Cannibal" Muscat (from Lynch) joined on drums. The band also recruited David Depasquale as a second guitarist, and as it was obvious the band were evolving into something harder, it naturally followed that the earlier material gave way to a more brutal musical direction.

Throughout the beginning of 2001 the band continued to develop in this direction. However the band was set back once again when Steve decided to leave due to personal reasons. His place behind the drum kit was aptly filled by an individual known to all only as iz- Ziemel.

In June 2001 both Alan "zZazZu" Briffa (Extorted) and Warren Vella (ex-Unknown Serenity) joined to form a two-pronged vocal assault. In October Warren left the band on amicable terms leaving zZazZu alone to front the band. After endless arguments, calling each other names, and spitting blood on each other, we settled for CANNIRIA rather than ending up in therapy.

Finally with a dedicated and a competent lineup CANNIRIA twisted their own brand of brutality to their liking and were finally ready to take their music to the stage. On Febuary 9th 2002 the band debuted in the Grim Reaper Festival. The band put on a good show and went down favourably well with the sizeable crowd which stood there till the very last minute to get the CANNIRIA assault down their throat.

Furthermore, CANNIRIA proved themselves even more when they played at Best In Town on April7th supporting Slit. A great sound and a confident performance proved that the band had potential in becoming a force in the local scene.
