Why do we wait

Why do we wait till tired hands are lying,

No more responsive from their tender touch;

Before we place therein those loving tokens,

They would have prized so much.

Why do we wait till weary hearts are shrouded

In death’s oblivious calm for evermore

Before we speak those words of true affection,

They would have loved before.

Why do we wait --- what might have been is changeless

The present calls us to these actions great;

Ours it may be to brighten someone’s journey,

Then oh, why do we wait?
